Sun Bum

I approached the founder of Sun Bum with the idea to animate their new Baby Bum characters through fun, animated shorts. We envisioned a character-driven animated video series that would introduce each character to appeal to their target audience of young families.

The challenge was to create a series of short videos that could effectively showcase the Baby Bum characters in various scenic locations across Oahu, Hawaii, in a way that was both captivating and true to the brand’s identity.

Solution

As an experienced animation director, I was tasked with the development of over 30 animated videos for the Baby Bum brand.

My role encompassed the entire creative process: from storyboarding to designing and animating each video of the series.

The objective was to highlight each of the Baby Bum characters — Bean Bag the pig, Duke the gorilla, Stoke the crab, Meow Meow the cat, and Coco the pelican — in a series that would be showcased on the brand’s website, social media platforms, and through paid advertisements.

The Process

The project presented a unique challenge: adapting Sun Bum’s existing 3D character designs into a 2D paper cut-out style for animation.

This required a thoughtful approach to ensure that the transition preserved the characters’ charm and appeal. The design phase involved meticulous attention to detail to replicate the 3D models in a 2D format, maintaining their distinctive features and personalities.

I began with detailed storyboards, visualizing each character’s adventures across the beautiful landscapes of Oahu.

The animation process brought these designs to life, animating each scene with care to ensure fluid motion and engaging storytelling.

Working solo, I managed to create a cohesive and visually appealing series that stayed true to the Baby Bum brand’s playful and adventurous spirit.

The Outcome

The animated video series was a success, significantly enhancing the online presence of the Baby Bum brand. The videos were well-received on various platforms, helping to increase brand awareness and engagement with the target audience. The unique 2D paper cut-out style animation stood out in the crowded digital space, drawing praise for its creativity and originality.

Through this project, the Baby Bum characters became beloved figures, further establishing the brand’s identity and connection with its audience.
